Kevin Bartolomeu has been bringing his girlfriend to church for the past few months. Kevin is nineteen years old and is from Cape Verde, an island country, off the western coast of Africa. He's here going to Medical School in Jinan, China, before he leaves to serve a mission for our church later this summer. He's the only member of his family who is a member of our church. He met Parami here in Jinan. She's from Sri Lanka, and is also attending Medical School.
Parami is about 4'8" tall. She's really tiny-- about half as big as me (Sue). She is very quiet, and was quite shy to begin with, but over the past few months, we've gotten to know her better. She has a lovely singing voice, and plays the guitar. Some time ago, Kevin started teaching her about our church, and last night, Parami was baptized. Our branch president, Robert Lewis who lives in Beijing, came down to conduct the interview and preside over the baptismal ordinance.
In the picture below, Parami looks extra, extra small next to President Lewis. She's little, but knowing that Pres. Lewis is 6'8" explains a little.
We don't meet in an LDS chapel here (there isn't one), so we arranged to use the pool in the basement of our hotel for the baptism, right at closing time (9:00 PM). It only took 5 minutes, and then we went up to our room on the 7th floor for her confirmation.
It was a great experience for us all.
