From the 30th of September through the 6th of October, we took a trip with some of the other BYU/Kennedy Center English Teachers. We visited North-Western China on the “Silk Road Tour”. We traveled through North boundaries of the Gobi Desert. We traveled by Planes, Trains, Busses, Camels and Donkey carts, as well as our own two good feet (hoofing it) a good part of the time. We visited the towns of Urumqi, Turpin, Jiaohe (ancient city), Dunhaung, Tuyugou Valley Villiage, the Pachikli Grottos on the cliffs of the Gaochang Ancient Town. We also saw the Sound Sand Mountain and Ancient Moon Lake as well as the Mogao Grottos and Xian. If you want to learn more about any of these interesting places, check them out on the internet.
We ate lots of really good Chinese food, including a dumpling banquet. They brought us at least 10 of these baskets of dumplings. Some were shaped to look like little ducks.
Some looked like pig heads.
We slept on hard beds for the most part. We had one night on the “soft (not so soft) sleeper train”, which we won’t soon forget. This picture is us, inside the sleeping area. Yes, they are really narrow bunk-beds.
Most nights we were in three or four star hotels. One hotel was pretty crummy, but the rest were fine.
