One of our last adventures in Hong Kong was a visit to the Tian Tan Buddha on the or Big Buddha located on Lantau Island. The Buddha is 34 metes (112 ft) tall and is the world's tallest outdoor bronze seated Buddha. We decided to take a ferry ride from the central dock in Hong Kong thinking that that would be the quickest way to get there (NOT). It turned out to be a long ride on the ferry which took over an hour but we enjoyed the scenery on the leisurely trip. We arrived on Lantau Island at about 4:35 expecting to catch Bus #2 to Ngong Ping near where the Buddha is located. It turned out we had just missed the last Bus #2 for the day. Luckily there was another bus (the absolute last one of the day) which was also leaving for Ngong Ping just as we arrived. We caught that and enjoyed a spectacular trip across the beautiful island.
The Buddha was spectacular even though we arrived there a little late.

To get down from the top of the mountain a cable car ride would be required. We checked and found out that we had only about 20 minutes to admire the Buddha and enjoy that part of the island before the last tram left. We had to run to catch the last tram off the mountain!
The tram ride down was a little scary! A picture from the tram above shows how steep the decent was. The island on the left is mostly man made and is the location of the new international airport in Hong Kong.

The final leg of our journey was on the impressive Hong Kong subway. It is very clean and fast relative to others we have taken and we used it several times during our visit to Hong Kong. After traveling by ferry, bus, tram and subway we arrived back at our hotel after a fun and eventful day.
To celebrate the day we ate dinner at an Outback restaurant near our hotel and then enjoyed one last stroll along the "Walk of Fame" to view the lighted Hong Kong skyline. We had a great time in this great city and would like to come back someday.
